[IMG=21271-7132]On October 19th BANKO contacted specialists in Crete in order to receive objective information about the consequences of the low pressure system on the island that caused strong winds and heavy rain. Heavy rain flooded homes, bad weather affected businesses and holiday accommodation, disrupted the work of airports – many flights are delayed or cancelled.
Viktoria Kizimova, Sales Director of UTE Megapolus Group, found herself in the epicenter of the element. ‘I was on the way from the airport. The road became heavy-going. However, as I know there were no victims. All-weather Hania Airport was closed for several hours – that was the biggest surprise’. However, the expert pointed out that no flights to Russia were cancelled.
Furthermore, Miltiadis Despotakis, owner and General Director of Kalamaki Travel, said that ‘the current situation is extraordinary for Greece. Last time it happened 20 years ago. Meanwhile, there is no drop in tourist flow; bookings in hotels are not cancelled’.
At the moment it continues raining in Crete. Experts point out that such weather is more typical for winter than for warm Cretan autumn. The weather should improve by the weekend as the low pressure system moves away.
